In the 1980s, video production was considered to be a luxury. The cost of putting together video equipment to do good quality productions could easily reach six figures. "Linear" analog edit suites had a separate component ("box") for every aspect of the production such as: switchers, audio mixers, character generators, videotape machines and special effects generators. Each box would cost thousands of dollars and took up large spaces.

Today, the number of different pieces of equipment needed has been reduced drastically, which routinely only consists of remote camera gear and a powerful computer. In many cases there is not even a need for videotape!

Equipment and methods have changed but so have the ways video is used. The internet revolution of the 1990s was just the beginning of the new world that was opened to video. In the 1990s, we knew that computers would someday change the way we lived and experienced life.
